Women with a Mission

For the past four years, Westminster women have been gathering every other month in someone’s home for supper, fellowship, and mission education. Liz Bacon and Peggy Carroll joined together in launching Dining for Donations, which has involved more than 45 women. Each meeting averages 15-20 in attendance, with the host providing the meal’s main course and attendees adding a side dish, beverage, or dessert.

Instead of spending money on a night out, women put $20 each into a basket, pooling their resources to support a different mission each time they meet. Often a representative will explain the history and mission of the organization, and sometimes those attending will bring items (diapers, clothes, canned goods) for the ministry recipients as well. Some of the supported missions have included Wayfarer House of Meeting Ground, YWCA Home Management Program, Habitat for Humanity, Women of the Mam Presbytery of Guatemala, and the Mozambique Church Build. From its inception, Dining for Donations has focused on projects that serve women and children and sought to balance local and international projects. Carrie Saathoff has also sponsored a Silpada jewelry sale for the past two years, donating her profits to purchase appliances for the families of the Habitat homes Westminster has built.

It is exciting to see how the brainchild of two members has developed into a marvelous way to nurture friendship and fellowship, to educate ourselves about mission resources, and to generate financial support for numerous worthy causes. Over the past four years, Dining for Donations has given away more than $4,000.
