New Produce Distribution Ministry

For the past 17 years, Lutheran Community Services (LCS) has operated a fresh produce distribution program near St. Stephen's Lutheran Church on West 13th Street. Each Wednesday morning, the Food Bank of Delaware delivers the produce and volunteers make it available to low-income clients who come to the site for fresh food for themselves and their families.

This program currently operates outdoors in all weather conditions. With the goal of providing more comfortable surroundings for clients and volunteers alike, LCS is working with St. Stephen's Lutheran Church and Westminster to bring this ministry inside.

Westminster's Urban Mission Committee is delighted to partner with LCS and St. Stephen's in this program. We will be the host site on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month, while St. Stephen's will host on the first and third (and occasional fifth) Wednesdays.

A small planning team had the opportunity earlier this summer to visit a similar program conducted at St. Philip's Lutheran Church on Kirkwood Highway. There was a palpable sense of joy and community as people gathered, prayed together, and selected nutritious foods that would help alleviate hunger in their households. It is a living example of church members and friends being the hands and feet of Christ in our hungry world.

What a wonderful use this will be of our Community Hall - exactly the type of program envisioned when the space was designed!
