Adult Education: Faith Through Music
January 14 @ 10:10 am - 11:00 am
Sunday, January 14, 2024
10:10–11:00 a.m.
Classroom 6 and Zoom
Presented by John S. Dixon, Composer, Clinician, and Organist
Composer and organist John S. Dixon will speak about how his faith has influenced his life as a composer – or has it been the other way around? John is organist and composer-in-residence at Providence Presbyterian Church in Virginia Beach. He has written some 950 pieces for church and secular use, many of them published, and every Sunday his music is heard in churches across the country and internationally.
On this same day at 3 p.m., a solo recital by John in the sanctuary will feature his own compositions for the King of Instruments. You will hear his arrangements made on familiar and unfamiliar hymn tunes, also favorite folk tunes, and some original compositions too.
John was born in England in 1957 and grew up about 50 miles east of London near the Thames River estuary. He started piano studies at age six and progressed to pipe organ at age 11. His first composition for public performance was the score to an original book for a youth theatre production when he was 16. He moved to America permanently in 1988 and became a member of Providence Presbyterian Church in Virginia Beach, Virginia, where he now serves as Organist and Composer-in-Residence. In his initial compositions, he concentrated on writing for church use: anthems for choir and organ voluntaries. More recently, he has been writing for professional performers, small ensembles, and full orchestra. His music has been performed all over the world. He resides in Norfolk with his wife, Karen. They have two grown children, Katie and Jack.
