Adult Education: The Gnostic Gospels

April 28 @ 10:10 am - 11:00 am

Sunday, April 28, 2024
10:10–11:00 a.m.
Classroom 6 and Zoom

Presented by Bob Cox

What is “heresy” and how can it help to define “orthodoxy”? The Gnostics were Jewish and Christian sects beginning in the late first century who emphasized personal spiritual knowledge (“Gnosis”) above orthodox teachings. Their writings flourished across the Mediterranean world until early Christian Church leaders denounced their teachings as heresy. Join Bob Cox as we review Gnostic teachings, both from the perspective of their critics and from the Gnostics own writings rediscovered in Nag Hammadi, Egypt, in 1945. These writings include: The Secret Books of James and John, The Gospel of Truth, The Gospel of Thomas, and a series of apocalyptic writings attributed to Paul, James, Adam, and Peter.

Bob is a long-time member of Westminster with a variety of interests ranging from Biblical history to nineteenth century literature. In his professional work, he is a cyber architect for a large bank. Bob is the graphics and technology support person for our Living Mosaics service.
