Presented by Claudia Trupp, Executive Director, The Innocence Project
Since 1989, over 3,000 people in the United States have been exonerated for crimes they did not commit. This tragedy represents over 29,500 years of lost time, with people being wrongly removed from their communities and families. As with many aspects of the criminal legal system, communities of color are most adversely impacted. In this hour-long presentation, Claudia Trupp, the Executive Director of Innocence Project Delaware, will explain the factors contributing to wrongful conviction, provide a brief history of the innocence movement, and discuss how issues involving race infiltrate the legal system at every stage.
Ms. Trupp has years of experience representing wrongfully convicted people in post-conviction proceedings. As the Founder and Director of the Center for Appellate Litigation’s Justice First Project, she supervised teams of attorneys, volunteers, and investigators in complex investigations. In addition to her expertise in wrongful conviction work, Ms. Trupp founded and directed the Center’s parole advocacy, conditions of confinement, and reentry projects. She has also taught and lectured on various topics relating to criminal law. The mother of three daughters, she published a memoir, Hard Time and Nursery Rhymes, about her experiences raising them while working as a public defender.
