Fact nor Fiction: The Benefits of Historical Imagination
October 18, 2022 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Tuesday, October 18
7 p.m. via Zoom
Presented by Dr. Anna Bowden, Assistant Professor of New Testament, Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary
Is it fact or fiction? Swoon-worthy or sacrilegious? On the heels of her latest novel, The Book of Longings, one might wonder what Sue Monk Kidd’s creation of Ana, the wife of Jesus, might mean for contemporary Christianity. Why this novel? Why this topic? Does it help us better understand the world from which Christianity was born? Or does it taint our understanding of Scripture? Using Kidd’s novel as our guide, we will explore the benefits of engaging an historical imagination, paying particular attention to first-century Judaism, Roman occupation, the role of women, and labor in the ancient world. Whether or not you’ve finished the novel, come learn about the New Testament world Sue Monk Kidd helps bring to life.
