Our Newest National Holiday – What Is It? How Do We Celebrate?
June 30, 2022 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Thursday, June 30, 7 p.m. on Zoom
KC Morrison and Sue Linderman
June 19, 1865, marked the day that 2,000 Union Army soldiers arrived in Galveston and Major General Gordon Granger announced that the more than 250,000 enslaved people in Texas were officially freed. While many slave owners in the state suppressed the news and retained control of their slaves for some time to come, this date officially marks the end of slavery in America. Juneteenth was first formally recognized in Texas, the first state to do so, in 1979; it is now a Federal holiday. Please join us to learn more about this fascinating aspect of our country’s history and the ways in which the holiday can be meaningfully celebrated. Hosted by Westminster’s Peace & Justice Work Group.
