Education Event: From I to We: A Vision for the Future from a Study of the Past

August 18, 2022 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Thursday, August 18
7 p.m. on Zoom

Presenter: David McBride

In The Upswing: How America Came Together a Century Ago and How WE Can Do It Again, Robert Putnam demonstrates that many of the problems of today also existed in the Gilded Age from 1870 to 1914. Those problems were overcome by the Progressive Movement beginning in the late 1800s. Putnam characterizes this as a movement from a focus on “I”— excessive individualism of the Gilded Age—to a focus on “We”—a balanced sense of community. Beginning in the 1960s, the “I” again began to dominate, leading to our current Gilded Age. David McBride will assess Putnam’s historical analysis to see how it applies today. Hosted by Westminster’s Peace & Justice Work Group.
