Peace and Justice Education Event: Assessing Structural Racism in Wilmington – Theory and Evidence Through Street Ethnography

April 13, 2023 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Thursday, April 13
7 p.m. on Zoom

Professors Morrison (Biden School) and Payne (Sociology and Africana Studies) present a discussion on structural racism and gun violence in Wilmington. Dr. Morrison considers the background and theory of structural racism; and, Dr. Payne provides evidence about gun violence in Wilmington from his new book, Murder Town, USA. The book, a street ethnography, details how race, ethnicity, gender, poverty, and white-wealth in a small city contributed to a street identity and the spread of local gun violence. The study features the voices of local men and women formerly involved with the streets who later became activists working on the problem of gun violence. Hosted by Westminster’s Peace & Justice Work Group.
