Peace and Justice Education Event: “Originalism” in Interpreting the United States Constitution

December 21, 2023 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Thursday, December 21, 2023
7-8 p.m. on Zoom

With Garrett Moritz, Attorney, Ross Aronstam & Moritz

In New York State Rifle & Pistol Association, Inc. v. Bruen, the Supreme Court in 2022 applied a “historical tradition” approach to determine the scope of Second Amendment protection. Where the Second Amendment’s plain text covers an individual’s conduct, a law restricting that conduct must be consistent with “the Nation’s historical tradition of firearm regulation.” The current state of Second Amendment case law has been significantly impacted. Garrett Moritz will describe his experience defending two Delaware gun safety bills enacted shortly after Bruen—statutes regulating assault weapons and large-capacity magazines—against Second Amendment challenges to the regulations. Hosted by Westminster’s Peace & Justice Work Group.

The opinions expressed in the presentation are solely those of the presenter and not necessarily those of the State of Delaware or its officials.
