Adult Education: The Mission of the Church and the Role of Advocacy
March 2 @ 10:40 am - 11:30 am
Sunday, March 2, 2025
10:40 – 11:30 a.m.
Classroom 6 and Zoom
Presented by Sonya Starr, Director, Housing Alliance of Delaware
Engaging in advocacy is one way to answer God’s call to seek justice. Christian advocacy seeks to bring justice to those facing violence, poverty, and discrimination, and help more of God’s children experience life in all its fullness. How do benevolent works inform, affect, and transform the social justice work? How can religious communities use their important experiences for community change? Is it legal? How do we learn to advocate effectively? Join us as Sonya shares her experience and expertise to guide us in this essential work. We may even include a practice run of the do’s (vs. the don’ts)!
Sonya Starr has a comprehensive career of fighting for social justice in her local community and ensuring that marginalized groups have a voice. For 21 years, she was the rabbi at the Columbia Jewish Congregation (CJC) in Columbia, MD. During that time, she helped her congregation create a sacred arguing policy, a social justice policy, and worked on issues ranging from marriage equality to immigrant justice. She stepped down from this position to pursue full-time social justice work. Sonya joined the Housing Alliance Delaware as Policy Director in March 2022 and has hit the ground running in championing safe and affordable housing for every Delawarean.
